In July 2013 the Civic Society was awarded with a £6500 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The grant was to enable the society to research the history of local allotments, to interview plot holders and to build up a picture of the growing habits of tenants within the local area.
A DVD and film has been produced as well as a picture book showing how people enjoy the challenge of keeping Mother Nature at bay on each and every plot.
Longfield site in Heckmondwike is home to around 35 allotment plots. The site is reserved for the growing of flowers and vegetables and no livestock is permitted other than the local wildlife and birds that regularly visit.
There have been allotments on this site for decades, although much of the original site has been removed for other purposes such as an extension to Batley cemetery. It is thought the smaller allotment site will face the same fate, however at the moment it is still in use by local gardeners to grow fruit and vegetables.
The site has been used by growers since the 1950s. It is only for the growing of fruit, vegetables and flowers as no livestock is allowed.
